You know something? I'd be glad if in a year or so, I had to say, <em>"Wow, I sure was wrong about Gabourey and Mo'Nique's future film careers</em>." However, while Sidibe can count Winfrey and Perry as supporters, I wouldn't be so quick to assume that means they're such good friends they cast her in roles she's not right for or give her jobs just to keep her busy. The studio star system no longer exists in Hollywood. Gabourey and Mo'Niqoue will have to open their own doors in order to live their dreams, same as every other Black actresses and actor. Nobody's going to hand it to them on a silver platter.

Jeff,
I would not be concern with Hollywood because Tyler Perry has create his own A-T-L-wood. You see, Gabourey has Oprah and Tyler as friends. You and I do not know either personally. So with that being said, she will have their support and they can open doors for her.
Unless you and I write our own paychecks, we are just talking on this website. And this means nothing.
Good luck watching Gabourey and Monique live their dreams.

isn't a pro-life statement political though, not in a socialist way at all? It's a tie between religion and politics there, too... It's an oppression of choice. Shutting down abortion clinics? Well... maybe not everyone wants one, but isn't getting rid of these clinics for ALL just as bad as anything Glen Beale said? You would be forcing someone into your beliefs

When Black "leaders", as of late, step up, they're usually staking a claim on resources; on the pain of those they’re claiming to “serve”, and causing more harm than good. The commodity of dysfunction enriches and gives them, not only purpose, but the legitimacy to sanction; to reward, to punish. Mr. Smiley was obviously either the heir apparent or hostile apostate to the Court of St. Jackson. This, as we're beginning to see, has made him more dangerous than Kwame & the Kilpatricks.

While the latter used CNN, the NYT and his Chicago print emissaries at Ebony/Jet/Essence, Mr. Smiley, trying first with ABCNews and BET, who just didn't want to deal with his follies, found his footing on the backs of PBS, CSPAN and a myriad of Public Radio Corps, who's differing degrees of cowardice opened a continuous revolving door of horrible programming that exhibits his unique brand of quasi-literate, mediocre journalism along with his public personae. Sadly, New & Notes and his nightly BET diatribes, for example, were nothing compared to the circusy displays of the self-congratulating stage of Black Elites posturing as a public interest gurus; a forum that greatly enhanced his king-making stature. This ability to self-promote and dole out power among his "Black Pack" (that's pretty damn funny and sad at the same time) made some feel good, but it could also destroy any validity these forum might supply.

Mr. Smiley's flair for the unspectacular, given credence by the industry's most vaunted and high-minded news outlets, can, and has caused, I feel, just so much damage, that even the most eloquent and profound of public intellectuals, like Orlando Patterson, can be made to look absolutely ineffectual, floundering and quite simply, foolish. An hour program would have at least twenty minutes of applauding, ten minutes to rehash the same old issue, with no new solutions, mind you and thirty minutes plus of closings and thank you.
You'd eventually have to ask yourself, why in the hell would anyone take seriously the problems that afflict blacks and incorporate them as America's own, when this man always appears to be selling used lemons? His self interest is distasteful and not for me.

Very insightful & well-researched post. You raise so many important questions. Even though it would be nice to believe that such narrow thinking stays within the confines of Hollywood, the truth is it's a major driving force of our culture.

I love the quote in your tag line. Keep the anger coming - looks like you've got a lot to say.

Positive images are rare indeed.

You can decide for yourself about Hattie McDaniels image. But Louis Gossett, Sidney Poitier, Jamie Foxx, Whoopi Goldberg,Jennifer Hudson, Morgan Freeman, Forrest Whitaker, and Denzel in Glory were not really considered negative roles.

Why does it seem that in order for African Americans to win an Oscar, you need to be disgusting(Halle Berry in Monster's Ball, Monique in Precious), despicable (Denzel in Training Days) or play the fool(Cuba Gooding Jr in Jerry Maguire)? Talk amongst yourselves!

Just remember this guy is a Republican Senator. I find it astonishing that one Senator, and an opposition one at that, can pull a stunt like this and get away with it.
