Mel Gibson has gone from playing Mad Max to “Mad Mel.” Having made anti-Semitic (“Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world”), sexist and homophobic remarks a few years ago, now he’s upped the ante to include racism as well.
The Oscar-winning director and actor who caused a media storm four years ago over an alcohol-fueled anti-Semitic rant is again feeling the heat for reportedly using a racial slur during an argument with his former girlfriend.
On Thursday, website Radaronline.com published transcript excerpts the site said came from an audiotape of Gibson telling his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he’s battling in court over custody of their infant daughter, that the way she dressed made her look like a “fucking pig in heat.”
Then Mel went for the killshot.
“If you get raped by a pack of niggers, it will be your fault,” Gibson reportedly shouted at Grigorieva.
Damn, Mel. Did you seriously drop a N-bomb ’cause you were that pissed off at your woman? You really had to go there?
Gibson’s attorney had no comment on the remarks, but if true, you can probably kiss Lethal Weapon 5 bye-bye.
What happens when an actor, singer, or other entertainer behaves or says something that offends on such a personal or political level you can no longer tolerate them?
“Terrible” Ted Nugent, the guitar shredding Motor City Madman, has taken up residence on the opinion pages of the Washington “Moonie” Times where he lambasted President Obama as “a clueless rookie.”
The Nuge was joined in his harsh criticism of Obama by the former Midnight Cowboy, actor Jon Voight who recently penned an open letter to the president accusing him of lying to Israel and saying, “You have brought to Arizona a civil war, once again defending the criminals and illegals, creating a meltdown for good, loyal, law-abiding citizens. Your destruction of this country may never be remedied, and we may never recover.”
Is this how conservatives felt when Rosie O’ Donnell and Sean Penn were regularly ripping into George W. Bush?
Chris Brown beats up women. John Wayne was a bigot. Sinead O’ Connor ripped up a photograph of the Pope on live television. Many vets despise Jane Fonda for giving aid and comfort to the North Vietnamese. Tom Cruise jumped up and down on Oprah’s couch and recruits other celebrities into Scientology. Michael Jackson allegedly molested little boys. O. J. Simpson may have gotten away with murdering two people. And on and on it goes…
If true, Gibson’s racial tirade is not going to go over well with a lot of people in the industry and in the ticket-buying public. The question is, How badly does someone have to behave or take political positions that differ from your own before you can no longer support them?
John Wayne’s racism forever spoiled his movies for me. As poorly as he thought of Blacks, he was even worse about Native Americans. I remember watching The Searchers, one of his finest performances and thinking, “As much as Wayne hated Indians, is this really acting or just going with experience?”
I was never as angry at Jane Fonda as others were. I didn’t serve in Viet Nam, though many of her actions and rhetoric were reprehensible and cruel. Ironic, that her co-star from Coming Home, Jon Voight has picked up the banner of controversy she used to carry.
I can’t watch any of The Naked Gun films anymore. They used to be funny, but the presence of O.J. Simpson drains all the laughter from them as surely as the blood was from the bodies of Nicole and Ron.
Entertainers come out of the same gene pool as everyone else and there are racists, homophobes, sexists, and other bigots in their profession as much as any other.
Whether it’s Michael Richards or Mel Gibson tossing around “nigger” not as humor but as a pejorative it is in the same ballpark as the hateful gibberish of a hardcore racist.
Voight, Nugent, O’Donnell and Penn are simply exercising their right to free speech though they use their celebrity status to elevate the significance of their opinion. It can get obnoxious and depending on how strident they are, it may be a reason to declare, “Okay, you’re dead to me now.” I still can enjoy Nugent cranking out “Free For All’ and Voight in Coming Home, but as far as their political beliefs? They’re dicks.
Not once did I hear Mel Gibson call Danny Glover a “nigger” through four Lethal Weapon movies. Maybe because he knows Glover would kick his fucking’ ass.
Merely being unpleasant and objectionable is one thing. On that score, Mad Mel has lots of company. Comes a time though when you can’t blame it on being drunk because alcohol is a truth serum as much as anything. It can’t be excused as a slip of the tongue or just a “whoops” where the mouth engaged before the brain. At some point you are what you are. Mel Gibson is a rotten human being and I can not and will not excuse his rotten behavior again.
Racist. Homophobic. Sexist. Anti-Semitic. Torture freak. Terrible waste of perfectly good air. I thought you were better than that Mel, but apparently you are a lot better an actor than you get credit for.
