Right-wingers harrumph when anyone tells them they display jaw-dropping degrees of disrespect toward Barack Obama. They sneer how Obama is so thin-skinned he can’t take anything but drooling adulation and unqualified praise and how he’s treated no worse than George W. Bush was by liberals.
Yeah, I’m going to call bullshit on that.
Munro showed his dick credentials by being a smart-ass by repeatedly interrupting President Obama as he spoke in the Rose Garden about his decision to stop deporting some illegal immigrants. The president wasn’t five minutes into his remarks when Munro shouted, “Why’d you favor foreigners over Americans?”
A visibly pissed Obama shot back at Munro, “Excuse me, sir. It’s not time for questions,” Obama said.
“No, you have to take questions,” Munro said.
“Not while I’m speaking.” Obama said.
As he closed his remarks, the president snapped back at Munro and made it clear he didn’t appreciate the interruption as horrified reporters looked on:
And the answer to your question, sir – and the next time I’d prefer you let me finish my statements before you ask that question – is this is the right thing to do for the American people –
THE PRESIDENT: I didn’t ask for an argument. I’m answering your question.
Munro sneered as a steamed Obama walked away, “What about American workers who are unemployed as you import workers?”
Munro, who describes himself as an Irish immigrant who married an American, What kind of tool tells The President of the United States he has to answer his questions?
Reporters are supposed to get politicians to answer their questions, but the way to get the story is not by becoming the story. Munro’s shouting questions at the president while the president was still speaking reaches a Joe Wilson level of disrespect.
You know you’ve gone too far in heckling and hassling the president when even Fox News says you’re a flaming asshole.
“I think it’s outrageous. I covered Ronald Reagan for six years with Sam Donaldson. We used to scream our lungs out asking him questions. But we always waited until the President – any president – was finished speaking. The idea that you would interrupt the President in the middle of prepared remarks and shout a question… I don’t think the guy should be allowed back in the White House on a press pass.” Chris Wallace said.
“Mr. Munro was absolutely wrong in interfering with the president’s statement. As Talking Points always says, you must respect the office of the presidency, even if you don’t like the person in it. Mr. Obama was correct in calling Munro out.,” Bill O’ Reilly chimed in.
Neil Monroe the jerk who interrupted the president deserves to have his ass kicked. He’s no reporter. He’s a rude-ideologically driven Ass, Fox News contributor Geraldo Rivera tweeted.
Being unprofessional hacks and smart-ass White boys, Munro and Carlson were unrepentant.
“I timed the question believing the president was closing his remarks, because naturally I have no intention of interrupting the President of the United States. I know he rarely takes questions before walking away from the podium. When I asked the question as he finished his speech, he turned his back on the many reporters, and walked away while I and at least one other reporter asked questions,” Munro said.
FIVE minutes into a speech Munro believed Obama was closing his remarks? Even other White House reporters called “bullshit” on that.
“I was two people over from Neil Munro. No one thought the president was wrapping up,” CNN’s Brianna Keilar said on her Twitter feed. “I give that statement a great big Cow Pie Award.”
Carlson added his own self-serving remarks backing his boy, “I don’t remember Diane Sawyer scolding her colleague Sam Donaldson for heckling President Reagan. And she shouldn’t have. A reporter’s job is to ask questions and get answers. Our job is to find out what the federal government is up to. Politicians often don’t want to tell us. A good reporter gets the story. We’re proud of Neil Munro.”
Sam Donaldson, the retired White House correspondent, was asked what Sam Donaldson thought of Carlson putting his name in his mouth.
“I never interrupted any president while he was making a formal presentation of any sort. You don’t do that, do you?”
Right, Sam. You don’t do that. You don’t interrupt even a school board member in the middle of a formal presentation. Even the worst student in a Journalism 101 class learns to show some respect before asking a disrespectful question.
If the White House press office doesn’t pull Munro’s pass they’re even more incompetent than he is and even Caren Bohan, president of the White House Correspondents Association doesn’t sound like she’s going to raise a fuss when they do.
“It was discourteous. It’s not the way reporters who cover the White House conduct themselves.
The WHCA always encourages vigorous questioning of the president, but that does not extend to rude interruptions of the president in the middle of a speech. I’ve thrown questions to the President before, but reporters typically wait until he’s finished speaking.”
The sun shines on every dog’s ass now and then and Munro can enjoy basking in the heat of his. It’s the job of any good reporter to be tough on a politician. Even the president and he gets a lot more slack because of the office he holds.
But there’s a difference between being smart and being smart-ass. Munro didn’t just cross the line, he obliterated it. Professional Obama haters will love him for it. Every one else with even a shred of respect for the office of the presidency will properly be disgusted.
