Robin Roberts Comes Out. The World Didn’t End.

Yep. I’m gay. Shocking, huh?

This year has been a difficult one for Good Morning America host Robin Roberts who spent a good deal of it fighting a tough battle of cancer.  Yesterday, Roberts posted a message on her Facebook page where she thanked her family and loved ones for their support and acknowledged she is a lesbian.

I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health.

I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann, for being my donor and giving me the gift of life.

I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.

I am grateful for the many prayers and well wishes for my recovery. I return every one of them to you 100 fold.

On this last Sunday of 2013 I encourage you to reflect on what you are grateful for too.

Most greeted Roberts’ revelation with a casual “okay, that’s nice” while some railed against the disclosure.  One super-hetero gender defender wrote of Roberts’ “a shame and a waste of a good woman.”   Lesbians aren’t good women?   That will be news to other lesbians.

Two questions here:  Ask yourself why who Robin Roberts loves is so important to you and if you don’t know her, why is it any of your business in the first place?  I always knew Roberts was playing on the other team and I never cared. Whose shoes are parked under her bed is her business and none of mine.

The only people who will be “shocked” by the news are the same ones who thought Luther Vandross was straight and it was cute when 40-something Michael Jackson happened to enjoy sleep-overs with young boys.  People will go to extraordinary lengths to deceive themselves.

You’ve been getting your news in the morning from a LESBIAN. Who can you trust now?

It’s great that Roberts came out.  From ESPN’s Sportscenter to GMA  she has always been one of the classiest and talented journalists on television It’s one of the bravest things a gay person can do.  All I hope is she’s happy and she encourages other closeted individuals to make 2014 the year they follow her lead.  If only one person who is afraid of living life out n’ proud finds the courage to do so due to Roberts, then I applaud her announcement. Go on with yo’ bad self, R.R.

Robin Roberts has been a role model, a trail-blazer and a survivor. Anyone who would scorn her or rebuke her for declaring she will love who she wants and how she wants really needs to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves why they are so miserable over her happiness.

Anything else is b.s. conversation and background noise.

Robin Roberts has kicked cancer’s ass and after that, handling the homophobic haters from the Church of Phil Robertson shouldn’t be a problem.
