Rachel Dolezal: Double Agent or Race Traitor?

If The Racial Draft really were a thing I’d want Rachel Dolezal on my team before Clarence Thomas.

I read this story elsewhere and when I finished I had one question and one question only.

Is  Dolezal doing a good job? If she is, then what’s the rumpus?

Oh sure, I can imagine there are many reasons why the head of a NAACP chapter should be Black instead of passing for Black, but the only question worth asking and answering is “Is she doing her job?” Not whether she’s really Black or should the NAACP have Whites in prominent leadership positions.   The organization has always been racially diverse and inclusive.  Dolezal took it to an extreme.

When Walter White became the organization’s first Executive Secretary in 1916, some wondered why a dude with blonde hair and blue eyes was running a civil rights organization for colored people. Turns out White wasn’t White, but Black. The NAACP has never been exclusively for Blacks only. The national office may have to address this matter to quell the controversy.

She wouldn’t be the first White person to long for an identity other than the one she was born with to get lost in a romance with Black culture.    Deceitful? Probably.  Deceptive?  Certainly.  Harmful?  Illegal?  If so, no one has made the case.

Is my hair Black enough for you?

The most troubling thing about Dolezal are the misrepresentations and lies she came up with to mask her passing for Black. This seems to me to be more of an ugly family matter than a willful attempt to deceive, but unless she has broken the law, I fail to see why Dolezal should be faulted for being a White woman concerned about fighting discrimination against People of Color.

The takeaway is I’m getting is transgender is okay for White men but transethnic is not okay for White women. Race is an “artificial concept” that doesn’t matter is what the Right wingers love to say.   Or at least it is right up until the time you try to transcend it. Assimilate! That is what Blacks are told they need to do. Assimilate into a White culture that doesn’t want you, resent you, and says you only got there through an affirmative action program. Woe betide anyone who forgets assimilation is strictly an “on” ramp into the White world and never an “off” ramp.

Where was all this offense and indignity about cultural appropriation when Iggy Azalea got off the boat became the latest non-Black star to get rich and die tryin’ by Outblacking the Black Folk (hello, Nikki Minaj. Little Richard would like to talk to you about Pat Boone). It wasn’t too long everyone seemed to think Miley Cyrus invented a new dance move in twerking? Is it okay if White people bite from Black culture and cash in on it as long as they don’t go too far and start thinking they ARE Black?

No. You can’t.

It may be delusional when a White woman working for the NAACP begins to identifies with Blacks so much she starts passing herself off as Black, but since she seems to be helping and not hurting I say “thanks” for the help. That’s the part that seems hardest for some both White and Black to wrap their heads around. Why would anyone go to such lengths to “be” Black? Of course Dolezal built a house of cards on sand in the middle of a hurricane and now that it’s coming down around her ears (in no small part due to the malicious actions of her family), there’s a lot of pleasure being taken by outsiders as her lies and fabrications are exposed.

It there is no evidence Dolezal broke any laws, what’s the controversy. Perhaps when she speaks publicly on Tuesday an admission may be forthcoming, but if fudging an employment application is a crime, there’s gonna be a lot of liars doing time in the slammer.

Something Dr. King said about the content of our character mattering more than the color of our skin seems relevant right about now.

If it worked for Caitlyn it can work for Rachel.

The Hypocrisy of the NFL’s N-Word Ban

“Don’t hurt me N-words.”

In yet another clumsily misguided attempt to exercise control over the players, the NFL is considering making the saying the slur, “nigger” on the field punishable by a 15-yard penalty.  Well, isn’t that sweet?   A league run by a pompous ass of a commissioner who cashed $44 million in checks last year given to him by 32 billionaires and millionaires and not a dark face among any of them are going to impose their morality upon the 70 percent Black young urban men who make up their teams.

The NFL is in full reactionary mode in the aftermath of the investigation into the sordid and ugly racial harassment suffered by Jonathan Martin by the crude Richie Incognito and other Miami Dolphins players.   Trying to impose a ban on a troublesome word won’t solve the problem of bullying in the locker room, but Roger Goodell isn’t one of the world’s most thoughtful CEO’s.   His approach is that of a hammer with nails all around him.

So if I’m a NFL player and I can’t say “nigger” but I can say “REDSKINS! REDSKINS! REDSKINS!”  that’s all good with Goodell?   Smells like a double standard to me.

“Wassup, my N-words?”

ESPN’s  Outside the Lines recently discussed the usage of “nigger” in popular sports and how the word is considered radically differently by generations with some seeing it as nothing but a vile and vicious insult while a younger generation that grew up dancing to it in rap music and hip-hop culture embrace it as a term of affection.

I didn’t get a lot out of the conversation except being disappointed in Michael Wilbon, a well-respected sports journalist,  shrugging off the slur as something he’s okay with because he uses the word when he’s kickin’ it  with the fellas.   The rationalization that it’s time to fight if a White guy asks, “Are you my nigga?”  but it’s all good when a Black guy does it is garbage.

There is no racial slur equal to being called a “nigger.” That is always the ultimate trump card a White person can throw on the table to insult a Black person. What’s the equivalent retort? White trash? Cracker? Republican?

Why someone thinks it is empowering to refer to themselves or others by a word that has always been to cast doubt on the very humanity of Blacks is a bafflement to me. I’m sure there’s an explanation of how this works, but I’ve never heard a good one.

I neither have nor want friends that feel comfortable in calling me a nigger and misspelling it as “nigga” is bullshit that doesn’t fly with me either.  Still, you can’t regulate and legislate “nigger” out of existence.   The NAACP staged a mock burial of the epithet several years ago, but that failed to kill it off.   How could it?  Only time, education and a greater sophistication of how unnecessary and stigmatizing it is to keep pumping life into what should be a dead word will drive the stake through its rancid heart.

Chris Murray, the Philadelphia-based sports journalist added his disdain for using “nigger” as a term among friends in his Facebook news feed with some in agreement and a few in vehement disagreement with one guy making a point of letting everyone know it too.

Everybody in this thread is a nigger. I said it!!!

Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word

Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I made a common mistake.  I attempted to being reasonable with an unreasonable man.  I said, “Please brother, speak FOR yourself ABOUT yourself. If you want to wear that tag, wear if for yourself, but don’t try to hang it around my neck.”

“I don’t know any niggers, don’t hang with any niggers and don’t call anyone a nigger.”

Jeff Winbush oh yea…you a nigger too. And you know quite a few.

I’m a proud nigga. Gonna be one until I die. And Jeff Winbush do your homework before you try to insult me. Nigga!!!!

No hood talk, not tryin to be tuff. Just truth. Ya know, it ain’t bad bein a nigga. I’m just not a white mans nigger! Get the.point!

Nigga nigga nigga nigga.

Trying to insult someone you don’t know with an ignorant word is really kind of ignorant. It’s a strong indicator you have to resort to dumb words because you don’t know enough smart ones.  I’m a proud Black man and nobody’s nigger or “nigga” which is just a cowardly way of trying to remix a vile and foolish word.

You can’t polish a turd. Trying to reclaim “nigger” as a term of endearment is a fool’s errand and an epic FAIL.  You’re saying “we” never had a problem with the word when you mean “I” never had a problem with the word.

I DO have a problem with the word and the word has gone away from my vocabulary. I don’t associate myself with an ignorant word that has only been used to degrade and diminish the humanity of Black people.

For the sake of accuracy, there’s no such thing as a “nigga.”  That’s a hip bastardization of a troublesome word.   Either you believe in the slur or you don’t.  All in or all out.  I’m out.

The NFL should be too.  Out of trying to be the P.C. police imposing the ethical standards of White owners on Black players.   They should trust in the ability of the players themselves to police their own language and each other.   If the NFL really finds the N-word so offensive they should stop treating the players like that’s what they are.

Shufflin’ Along With Shelby Steele

not shelby steele

Shelby chills on his day off.

Shelby Steele believes today’s Black leadership treads in victimhood, ducking responsibility and playing an old, played-out “Blame Whitey” game.

The verdict that declared George Zimmerman not guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin was a traumatic event for America’s civil-rights establishment, and for many black elites across the media, government and academia. When you have grown used to American institutions being so intimidated by the prospect of black wrath that they invent mushy ideas like “diversity” and “inclusiveness” simply to escape that wrath, then the crisp reading of the law that the Zimmerman jury displayed comes as a shock.

On television in recent weeks you could see black leaders from every background congealing into a chorus of umbrage and complaint. But they weren’t so much outraged at a horrible injustice as they were affronted by the disregard of their own authority. The jury effectively said to them, “You won’t call the tune here. We will work within the law.”

There’s another sort of establishment and that’s the one where Black conservatives talk about the Black experience, but not to other Black people who know it already.

That is why Steele’s sphere of influence is primarily limited to (gasp!) White male conservatives who say they are the true victims of racism, avoid any acknowledgement of the considerable advantages White Privilege affords them and are play an even older, but just as played-out game calleed “Why Can’t You Lazy Blacks Stop Complaining and Blaming Us Because You Aren’t White Like Me?”

“Can I be your Black Friend Forever, George?”

If Black liberals get paid to soothe White Guilt,  Black conservatives work their own hustle by appealing to White Denial.   Steele is fluent in the familiar language of the apologist and appeaser as he scorns the attention the “civil rights establishment” has paid to the unworthy Trayvon.

Why did the civil-rights leadership use its greatly depleted moral authority to support Trayvon Martin? This young man was, after all, no Rosa Parks—a figure of indisputable human dignity set upon by the rank evil of white supremacy. Trayvon threw the first punch and then continued pummeling the much smaller Zimmerman. Yes, Trayvon was a kid, but he was also something of a menace. The larger tragedy is that his death will come to very little. There was no important principle or coherent protest implied in that first nose-breaking punch. It was just dumb bravado, a tough-guy punch.

There was nothing in the Zimmerman trial that established Martin “threw the first punch.”   Nor is any truth to Steele’s slander that Martin was “something of a menace.”   After all, it is  the “cherubic” Zimmerman (as Steele lovingly describes him) who has the criminal record.

There is no need for similar acts of character assassination about Zimmerman’s character. The menace posed by his history is a matter of legal record.

The neighborhood watch volunteer who wanted to be a cop was arrested in July 2005 for “resisting officer with violence” and “battery of law enforcement officer.” Zimmerman got into a scuffle with cops questioning a friend for alleged underage drinking. Upon entering an alcohol education program, the charges were reportedly reduced and then waived. The next month in 2005, Zimmerman’s former fiance sought a restraining order against him because of domestic violence. Zimmerman sought a restraining order against her in return. Both were granted.

Despite Steele’s scurrilous slurs against a murdered and unarmed teenager,  it is  Zimmerman’s brushes with the law  establish he was the real “fucking punk.”   The White conservatives who make up Steele’s readership are not concerned with Zimmerman’s established record of criminality as much as they are the threat a unleashed Trayvon Martin might have.     It isn’t truth Rupert Murdoch is paying Steele to provide.   It is relief for poor, put-upon White conservatives who have nothing but fear and loathing in their hearts for every other Trayvon that hasn’t been murdered yet.

Steele is in the same class of race hustlers like Clarence Thomas, Herman Cain, Allan West, Mira Love, Niger Innis, Star Parker, Walter Williams, Larry Elder, Jesse Lee “thank God for slavery” Peterson, Uncle Tom Sowell, and of course Gentle Ben Carson.  With the exception of Carson, not one of them has any clout or following within the Black community.

“Sure. Just put on a hoodie and start running.”

Why would they? Their job is to represent themselves, not the interests of Black people as they show up at right-wing conferences, Tea Party rallies and Republican conventions telling the attendees what the are paid to say and smile pretty when the camera pans the audience so conservatives can point to those one or two grains of black pepper among all that white salt and flaunt their commitment to “diversity.”

Which is about an inch deep as it is wide, but somebody’s got to play The Spook That Sat By the Door., so why not Shelby Steele? He’s uniquely qualified to suck up to the White conservatives that keep him gainfully employed and will remain useful so long as he keeps making them feel good and exhibits he’s sufficiently grateful. When they’re done with him they’ll just throw him out and get another off the shelf just like him.

The next Shelby Steele will also specialize in dispensing useless advice to his core audience.  But that core audience does not include anyone who looks like Shelby Steele.

“Yes, I’m an ass-kisser, but I’m an EXCELLENT ass kisser.”

Does the Right To Privacy Include the Right To Be Racist?

There is a belief—a hope, really–that racism is so uncool and we’re all too hip to waste time hating someone based on something as silly as skin color.

Reality has a bad habit of shredding belief and hope. A few weeks ago, America messed around and reelected a Black guy as President. This historical event was not marked with universal acclaim.

That is when young White kids went to Twitter and Facebook to show how proud they were of their red necks.

“Since when did we allow monkeys to be President?”

“If Obama wins, I’m gonna buy a coon hound and hunt the nigger down”

“All you blackies only want Obama bec he is black. Bet you know nothing about him. Learn some shit. Then decide who you want. Not by color.”

#MyPresidentIsBlack..#FuckMyLife

“Obama’s a nigger. That’s why he shouldn’t live in the WHITE house.”

‘Romney’s campaign filed a lawsuit today claiming the election was “nigger rigged” ‘

“If I were invited to the White House I’d go to spit in the presdent’s face. NIGGER.”

“We were doin just fine with white presidents…leave it to a nigger to mess stuff up”

“Good news niggers. Four more years of living. Off the white man”

“I hope the White House burns down and Obama and his family are in there…and the whole democratic party for that matter”

These tweets and posts were compiled on a Tumbir page called Hellothereracists. The creator of the page went further than simply reproducing the racist messages. He also included their names, pictures, towns and even the high schools and occupations as well.

This has created a tug-of-war between two core principles. The right of citizens to express themselves even in the most hateful terms against their expectation of privacy. A girl in Methuen, Massachusetts might not really gob in President Obama’s face if she should meet him in the White House, but as bigoted and ignorant as she may be, she is not a public figure.

Does it make anyone less racist if they are outed on the Internet for tweeting something racist?

In this week’s bout of Internet shaming, a Tumblr called Hello There, Racists! is collecting the sentiments of bigoted Obama haters. Many are teenagers, and their tweets and Facebook posts appear with their pictures and the names of the cities they live in and the schools they go to. Scrolling through this collection, I’m so grossed out by the tweets that it’s hard to remember why I think this Tumblr is such a bad idea. OK, right: As my colleague Laura Anderson reminded me in an email thread, “I don’t think strangers should be posting minors’ contact information on the Internet, period.” Internet vigilante-ism at the expense of kids is just a terrible idea, given their youth and the evidence that their brains aren’t fully developed, especially in the impulse-control regions.

I also doubt the public shaming will push these kids to reconsider their views—more like give them more reason for indignation. If you come under attack for something you thought you said privately, however wrong you were about that, wouldn’t you feel anger more than remorse?

I’m not a big believer in the purifying effect of public shaming, but I’m even less so when you’re throwing the dumb things kids say back in their faces. Many adults have learned to their sorrow how that post bitching about the boss and his stank breath ended up on their next performance review. Future employers and college admission boards might not look favorably on choosing someone who publicly called the president a nigger and hopes he and his family die in a fire.

Racism isn’t cool. Most of us already reached that conclusion without having our noses rubbed in vulgar descriptors of Black people. Your mama’s assertion of the threat level posed by sticks and stones compared to stupid words is still correct. Maybe if left to their own devices some of these dumb kids will eventually smarten up.

We don’t let kids get a driver’s license or vote until they turn 18. They can’t drink (legally) before 21. They can’t sign certain legal documents or join the military things until their voices deepen and their balls drop. There are many reasons why kids can’t do a lot of things, but the best reason is they aren’t mature enough to be responsible.

It’s a bad to hold teenagers responsible for every stupid things they say and do when they are teenagers. George Zimmerman’s lawyers want to see records of Trayvon Martin’s Tweets. Set aside how ghoulish it is to go rifling through the spontaneous thoughts of a dead kid and ask why the attorneys want that access. They are looking for expressions by Martin of anger, violent tendencies and dangerous beliefs. Just enough smoke to cast doubt in a juror’s mind that Martin might have been a criminal in waiting and Zimmerman was right in blowing out his flame.

From the perspective of someone who has no patience for racism, causing a little embarrassment to these kids at a point in their intellectual development they might still understand how wrong they are, isn’t entirely all bad.

As someone who neither believes in censorship or heavy-handed political correctness, the black and white response by the Hello there, Racists creator is in its own way just as brash and misguided as the crude bigotry of those he holds up to ridicule.   The spontaneous reactions of kids being dickish in a Facebook post should not include their names and faces, what school they attend or jobs they work. Calling the president a “coon” and a “nigger” and hoping he and his family die in a fire in the White House is vile stuff. In some cases may justify a Secret Service inquiry.

Publicly humiliating Johnny and Sally in a modern version of the pillory and stocks may knock the hate out of them as others are encouraged to throw rotten vegetables at them in cyberspace. Or it may compel them to double down instead.

We can grow up and out of our misguided beliefs. Instead of scrawling them in a secret diary some of our uglier, anti-social thoughts get expressed in social media. That is an opportunity to show a young, impressionable mind where they got it wrong. Scorn and hatred returned to them may only serve to validate their expressions of ignorance.

Having a “I Hope They Ain’t Black” Moment.

If you’re Black, have you ever heard about some awful crime and thought to yourself, “I hope they ain’t Black?”

But in your guts you know they probably are?

As I read  this story today even as my blood boiled, my heart sank:

DENVER — A Denver police officer trying to break up a confrontation was shot and killed Sunday at a city park where hundreds of families had gathered for a free weekly jazz concert before gunfire erupted and sent hundreds fleeing.

The officer, who was shot in the head, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The Denver Post reported that one person has been taken into custody but added they had not been confirmed as a suspect.

NBC News station KUSA reported that officers were seen searching a dumpster near a lake on Sunday night.

According to the newspaper, the slain officer was a single mother who was originally from Detroit. She was a seven-year veteran of the police force, the Post reported.

At least three shots were fired shortly after the jazz band playing on a lake-side pavilion stage finished, sending waves of people running through park grounds where some concert-goers who were initially unaware of the shooting remained seated on picnic blankets and lawn chairs.

That sick, sad feeling began to settle in. I’ve seen this movie before and it never has a happy ending.

(Goddammit, why do these gun-toting, mouth-breathing, loser assholes always have to mess up everything.)

That was my initial thought.

Then I read more through the story looking for hints of the race of the cop and the shooter. There were no names, but mentioning the slain officer was a single-mother from Detroit sent up red flares.

(Shit. I bet she’s Black.)

Nothing provided a  hint of the suspect’s race until I found a follow-up story in the Denver Post:

Officer Celena Hollis: died in the line of duty.

A 21-year-old man with a clean criminal record in Colorado on Monday was advised he is being investigated for the murder of Denver Police Officer Celena Hollis.

Police believe Rollen Oliver, 21, shot Hollis in the head when she responded to a report that two groups were fighting during the City Park Jazz concert Sunday night.

Monday morning he appeared at an advisement hearing.

He was escorted into the courtroom by six Denver deputies, all of whom had black and blue bands of mourning over their badges.

Oliver wore a red jail jumpsuit and had chains around his waist that were held by a deputy. He was handcuffed and shackled.

He is being held in the Denver jail without bond, facing first-degree murder charges.

Rollen Oliver. Yeah, he’s probably Black.

Dammit.

You look for the signs to figure out if it’s a White guy or Black guy.

Pedophile ring with thousands of images of kiddie porn on their computers? White guys.

Shooting between two groups at a concert/in the park/in a club/on the block? Black guys.

Guy goes into work and kills everyone he sees then shoots himself after a stand-off with cops? White guy.

Man walks into a inner city liquor store and puts two bullets in the head of the clerk and escapes with $50 bucks? Black guy.

Serial killer? White guy.

Deadbeat baby daddy who won’t take care of his ten kids with five different women? Black guy.

I tell myself nobody is responsible for the bad actors who shame themselves and by extension shame their entire race. I know in my rational and logical mind there is no reason to think this way. No one, no matter how noble or evil or foolish represents or reflects on every other member of a racial or ethnic group.

The journalist Carl T. Rowan sagely observed, A minority group has “arrived” only when it has the right to produce some fools and scoundrels without the entire group paying for it.

Logically, sure, I know this to be true, but the failures of Black people are so often shoved under my nose, I find myself actively craving and seeking the success stories just to remind myself we’re ALL not thugs, criminals, psychos and human garbage.

The Black race has produced philosophers, healers, entertainers, scientists, politicians, athletes and other men and women of distinction that have made the world a better place.

What would DuBois think about Black-on-Black crime?

It needs more like Celina Hollis and a lot less like Rollen Oliver because fools and scoundrels like him make us all look bad. We have to produce a hundred Martin Luther Kings to make up for one Rollen Oliver.

I shouldn’t feel embarrassed for every Black person, but when I know how this kind of tragedy will be seen (and spun) as Blacks killing, Blacks being violent, Blacks doing stupid shit, Blacks proving every horrible stereotype about us is true, I do feel embarrassed for every Black person who doesn’t kill, who isn’t violent, who do smart stuff and prove every horrible stereotype about us is false.

After all, do White people ever feel a sense of collective guilt that Adolf Hitler and Jeffrey Dahmer and Lee Harvey Oswald and Jerry Sandusky are White? No such shame in their game.

W.E.B. DuBois said, “The Negro race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men (and women, I would amend).” DuBois was speaking of a “Talented Tenth” percent of the race that would rescue the rest of the race. It sounds a bit elitist, but DuBois was fundamentally correct it’s the exceptional people of a race that inspire and lead the rest of the race.

I don’t know if Celena Hollis was exceptional, but I’m certain Rollen Oliver was not.

I keep hoping they ain’t Black but I am seldom surprised and continually disappointed once I know they are.

Are White people embarrassed because Jeffrey Dahmer was White? Nope.

Guns Don’t Kill (But Hoodies Do?)

President Obama was asked about the Trayvon Martin shooting.  He replied cautiously but he didn’t duck the question

President Barack Obama said Friday that “every aspect” of the death of Trayvon Martin, the black teenager shot in Florida last month, must be investigated.

“My main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin: If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Obama said. “I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we’re going to get to the bottom of what happened.”

Asked by NBC’s Mike Viqueira to comment on the Martin case, which has prompted national outrage after the shooter evaded arrest for claiming he shot the unarmed teen out of self-defense, Obama said, “Obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids.”

He added, “I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together – federal, state, and local – to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.”

“All of us have to do some soul-searching to do figure out how something like this happens,” Obama told reporters.

The president’s remark were measured, thoughtful and sympathetic to the Martin family.  He hit all the right notes which would be slightly offset by the tone-deaf and brain-dead remarks of Geraldo Rivera, the Fox News personality (you couldn’t call him a “journalist”) who despite nobody having asked for his opinion declared wearing a hoodie killed Trayvon as much as Zimmerman’s bullets did.

When you see a kid walking down the street, particularly dark-skinned kid like my son Cruz — who I constantly yelled at when he was going out wearing a damn hoodie or those pants around his ankles. “Take that hood off!” People look at you and what’s the instant identification, what’s the instant association? It’s those crime scene surveillance tapes. Every time you see someone stickin’ up a 7-11, the kid’s wearing a hoodie. Every time you see a mugging on a surveillance camera or they get the old lady in the alcove, it’s a kid wearing a hoodie. You have to recognize that this whole stylizing yourself as a “gangsta”… You’re gonna be a gangsta wanna? Well, people are going to perceive you as a menace. That’s what happens. It is an instant reflexive action.

Oh, shut up, you miserable HACK.

Rivera takes blaming the victim to an absurd new low.  If only Tracy Martin had dressed his son better before allowing him to leave home, why he still might be alive according to Rivera’s perverse logic.

Then the equally swinish Newt Gingrich got in on the act to criticize the president for saying if he had a son, that son would look like Trayvon.

“It’s not a question of who that young man looked like. Any young American of any ethnic background should be safe, period. We should all be horrified no matter what the ethnic background,” Gingrich said. “Is the President suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot that would be ok because it didn’t look like him?”

Earlier in the day Gingrich told reporters that he thought the case should be investigated and suggested the shooter was at fault.

“That’s just nonsense dividing this country up. It is a tragedy this young man was shot,” Gingrich continued on Hannity’s show. “It would have been a tragedy if he had been Puerto Rican or Cuban or if he had been white or if he had been Asian-American of if he’d been a Native American. At some point we ought to talk about being Americans. When things go wrong to an American. It is sad for all Americans. Trying to turn it into a racial issue is fundamentally wrong. I really find it appalling.”

This definitely is a racial issue and it is definitely was a case of someone who didn’t look White suffering the consequences because a bully and punk with a gun didn’t like those kind of people in his neighborhood.  Why can’t Gingrich figure that out if he’s supposed to be a smart guy?

Probably because he’s not and this is way outside of the right-wing comfort zone.  They like their Black teenagers as predators, not victims.  Fox News was slow on their coverage about Trayvon Martin and now they’re chasing the story trying to catch up.  But this is not the kind of subject the Right has comfort with.  If only Zimmerman had been a cop.  Fox would have no problem rationalizing this all way as a justified shooting.

Minus that angle, people who historically have shown indifference and hostility towards Blacks now have to try to show they can be sympathetic instead. Could they look any more awkwardly inept trying to?

Why do Geraldo and Newt say stupid shit?  For the same reason a dog licks his own balls: Because they can.

The hoodie is not the problem. The perception of the hoodie is.

Pat Buchanan Worried America Is Running Out of White People

White, but not right

We like to tell ourselves only stupid people are stupid enough to be openly racist these days.  Things have changed and we’re all so much more enlightened and past all that tired old prejudice thing.   Some of us even got ourselves believing its racism by Blacks against Whites that’s the real problem now.

Then there are the few and the proud who know better.  They’re few because their old school brand of bigotry has diminished and dimmed over the passage of time.  But they’re still proud to be White, Right and on top and they aren’t going to fade quietly away when they perceive their standing is being threatened.

MSNBC (y’know, the supposed “liberal” network) political commentator Pat Buchanan isn’t even pretending he’s not a ranting racist anymore.

He’s putting on his Paul Revere gear to warn of the dire consequences that will happen to America when Whites are no longer the majority race somewhere around 2041.

John Hope Franklin, the famed black historian at Duke University, once told the incoming freshmen, “The new America in the 21st century will be primarily non-white, a place George Washington would not recognize.”

In his June 1998 commencement address at Portland State, President Clinton affirmed it: “In a little more than 50 years, there will be no majority race in the United States.” The graduates cheered.

The Census Bureau has now fixed at 2041 the year when whites become a minority in a country where the Founding Fathers had restricted citizenship to “free white persons” of “good moral character.”

What are the seemingly inevitable consequences of an America where whites are a shrinking minority?

First, the end of a national Republican Party that routinely gets 90 percent of its presidential votes from white America.

California is the harbinger of what is to come.

Carried by Richard Nixon in all five presidential elections when he was on the ticket and by Ronald Reagan all four times he ran, California, where whites are now a shrinking minority, is a state where the GOP faces extinction. John McCain’s share of the California vote was down to the Barry Goldwater level of 1964.

When Texas, where two-thirds of the newborns and half the schoolchildren are Hispanic, goes the way of California, it is the end for the GOP. Arizona, Colorado and Nevada, also critical to any victorious GOP coalition, are Hispanicizing as rapidly as Texas.

In every presidential election since Bush I in 1992, Hispanics have given 60-70 percent of their votes to the Democratic ticket.

For Hispanics, largely poor and working class, are beneficiaries of a cornucopia of government goods – from free education to food stamps to free health care. Few pay federal income taxes.

Why would they not vote for the Party of Government?

Second, the economic crisis of California, brought on by an outflow of taxpayers and a huge influx of tax consumers – i.e., millions of immigrants, legal and illegal – will be mirrored nationally.

For though the majority of immigrants and illegals comes to work, and work hard, most now come from Third World countries and do not bring the academic or professional skills of European-Americans.

Third, the decline in academic test scores here at home and in international competition is likely to continue, as more and more of the children taking those tests will be African-American and Hispanic. For though we have spent trillions over four decades, we have failed to close the racial gap in education. White and Asian children continue to outscore black and Hispanic children.

Can the test-score gap be closed? With the Hispanic illegitimacy rate at 51 percent and the black rate having risen to 71 percent, how can their children conceivably arrive at school ready to compete?

Should this continue for three decades, what will it mean for America if Asians and whites occupy the knowledge-industry jobs, while scores of millions of black and Hispanic workers are relegated to low-paying service-sector jobs? Will that make for social tranquility?

Affirmative action is one answer. But this is already causing a severe backlash, and the reason is obvious.

When affirmative action was first imposed, whites outnumbered blacks nine to one. The burden of reverse discrimination on the white community was thus relatively light. Today, however, not only blacks, but Hispanics and women – two-thirds of the entire population – qualify for affirmative action in hiring and school admissions.

Those who hold the white race responsible for the mortal sins of mankind – slavery, racism, imperialism, genocide – may welcome its departure from history.

Those who believe that the civilization that came out of Jerusalem, Athens, Rome and London to be the crowning achievement of mankind will mourn its passing.

I’m not going to say I’m looking forward to the 72-year old Buchanan’s passing, but I won’t lie and say I’m going to be upset when it happens.  Here we have a former Nixon speechwriter, failed presidential candidate, sexist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, Nazi sympathizing, Holocaust denying, racist, xenophobic scumbag who revels in being angry and outspoken about who he loves (White people) and who he hates (everybody else).

I’ve said it myself: Hitler comparisons are weak. Most of the time they are made in error and are applied inaccurately.

But not in the case of Patrick J. Buchanan.  In this dude’s case you’d be hard pressed to find a mainstream commentator more likely to cut Hitler slack than Prejudiced Pat.

His anti-Semitism is well-established as well as his passionate defense of accused Nazi war criminals. Buchanan doesn’t apologize for it and he’s not going to run away from his racist and supremacist beliefs I’m not going to shy away from calling him out on it.

Here are more of Uncle Pat’s musings about what’s wrong with America.

Obama’s White House thus enlisted in the long and successful campaign to expel Christianity from the public square, diminish its presence in our public life, and reduce its role to that of just another religion.

The white population will begin to shrink and, should present birth rates persist, slowly disappear. Hispanics already comprise 42 percent of New Mexico’s population, 37 percent of California’s, 38 percent of Texas’s, and over half the population of Arizona under the age of twenty. ……. Mexico is moving north. Ethnically, linguistically, and culturally, the verdict of 1848 is being overturned. Will this Mexican nation within a nation advance the goals of the Constitution—to “insure domestic tranquility” and “make us a more perfect union”? Or has our passivity in the face of this invasion imperiled our union?

Not until the 1960s did courts begin to use the Fourteenth Amendment to impose a concept of equality that the authors of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, The Federalist Papers, and the Gettysburg Address never believed in. Before the 1960s, equality meant every citizen enjoyed the same constitutional rights and the equal protection of existing laws. Nothing in the Constitution or federal law mandated social, racial, or gender equality.

If [conservative political commentator Heather] Mac Donald’s statistics are accurate, 49 of every 50 muggings and murders in New York are the work of minorities. That might explain why black folks have trouble getting a cab. Every New York cabby must know the odds, should he pick up a man of color at night.

Two things smell like pork and one of them is pork.

Then there’s my favorite “OMG/WTF” quote.

Perhaps some of us misremember the past. But the racial, religious, cultural, social, political, and economic divides today seem greater than they seemed even in the segregation cities some of us grew up in.

Back then, black and white lived apart, went to different schools and churches, played on different playgrounds, and went to different restaurants, bars, theaters, and soda fountains. But we shared a country and a culture. We were one nation. We were Americans.

For some reason I have this sudden urge to start whistling “Dixie.” What a mind-boggling confessional of sheer paranoia, hatred and outright lunacy.    When I read some delusional bullshit where a some Irish asshole like Buchanan longs for the days when the darkies knew their place and stayed there I wish I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Buchanan so I could look him directly in the face and say, “Hey, Pat?  Go to hell, you racist punk “

Buchanan is crazy as the day is long but he’s also well-paid and has a high-profile to air his bigotry against Blacks, Latinos, gays, Jews, women and anyone else who isn’t straight, White, male and Irish Catholic. He is Archie Bunker without the laugh track.

Shame on MSNBC for turning a blind eye to this evil old bastard’s hatred of everything that isn’t White, straight and Christian.   These kinds of expressions of bias is nothing new from Buchanan, but MSNBC seems content to allow him to go on vomiting up his provincial   Left to his own devices, Buchanan is nothing to get excited about.   He might have another ten years of hate speech left in him and then he’s gone like a bad odor.  His racism is indistinguishable from that of a David Duke, but because he has some credentials he has credibility Duke can only dream of.

It’s easy to dismiss Buchanan as an aging anachronism soon to disappear in the tar pits with all the other dinosaurs whose brains were too small to adapt to a brave new world.   It’s a mistake to think what he says doesn’t resonate in the corridors of power where the decisions are made to support or oppose people
of color rising up to assume their rightful place in this country.

Forget about Occupy Wall Street.  Let’s Occupy Pat Buchanan’s brain.  We just have to find it first.

Buy it for that racist in your family who's worn out their copy of "Mein Kampf"

Crime is scarier than swine flu

It’s said if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.   That’s true as far as it goes.  It is very important to stay healthy and avoid catching scary diseases like swine flu.   It just might be hazardous to your health.

Yet while the swine flu is serious business, I like to believe if  you take reasonable precautions, you can handle it if you get it or more likely you can avoid it altogether

It’s the routine and ordinary events of life in the city that scares me.

Last week, for the second time in six months someone held my nephew at gunpoint.   They broke into the house while he was there, held him at gunpoint while they stole several Xbox 360 video systems and the games and threatened his life.

To add insult to injury, my nephew recognized one of the thieves as a kid from the neighborhood whom he played with when they were both boys.   Now the son of a bitch is part of a crew of home invaders.

After taking the Xboxes and robbing my nephew of his money,  debit card and keys, they forced him to unlock the back door so they could get out.    One of the thieves held a gun on him while he was struggling to open the door.   He heard the thug cock the gun and he recalled thinking, “I’m going to get killed because I can’t open this stupid door.”

But he did get the door open and he survived a terrifiying situation.   He was and is throughly shaken by such a horrific situation.  We all come up with possbile worst-case scenarios and “what would we do” to get out of them alive, but one cannot know how they will react until the worst case actually happens.

I’m proud that my nephew showed both courage and common sense.  There were at least three to four guys  who broke in and that’s nowhere close to even odds.   He did the right thing by complying and not resisting.   A Xbox and a video game can be easily replaced.    You only get one life and you do everything you can to keep it.

Live to learn and fight another day.   That’s all that matters.  Everything else is just stuff that you can get more of.

An all too common sight across the nation

An all too common sight across the nation

I’ve written more columns than I care to recall  about Black-on-Black crime and how we have to stop killing each other for trivial and stupid things like video game systems.   It was only a matter of time  before this kind of crime stopped being an abstract thing and someone I know and care for became a victim.   I’m sorry  that it has happened to my nephew–twice—where he has had his life threatened at gunpoint.   That’s just too much to put on any 19 year-old.

Every morning my daughter walks to the bus stop I worry just a bit because there at least three or four sexual predators living our neighborhood.   Not a day goes by that I don’t think about my son 100 miles away attending college in a city where he doesn’t know a soul.    I find myself hoping my sister who lives by herself remembers to turn on her alarm system before she goes to sleep at night.

These days I won’t even honk my horn at some idiot on the road because they might be both strapped and crazy; a bad combination since I am neither.

It bothers me that I have more reason to be afraid of another Black man than I should be of a White racist.    It bothers me a lot.

Suffering a bout with the swine flu sounds so exotic and rare compared to the mundane and routine day-to-day problem of urban crime.   My nephew’s family called and reported the assault and robbery to the police.  They came by and took his statement, dusted for fingerprintes and issued a warrant for his ex-friend.    I hope they catch them soon before someone ends up getting shot and killed over complete bullshit.

Nobody called the local press.  Why bother?  Nobody got shot.  Nobody got caught.  It was just a bunch of Black kids jacking another Black kid.   It  not newsworthy and it sure isn’t unusual.

Swine flu is unusual.  The two-legged swine that victimize and terrorize their own people are depressingly routine.

I never stop hoping I won’t have to write any more stories like this, but I always do.   It’s a growth industry.
